The fundamental question one needs to seek the answer to, as you embark on this journey is not whether or not you are ready, but rather, what do I need to be ready for all of the new things that one encounters on the journey. Remember, life’s best experiences come from the journey, not the destination.

We have created this article to provide the reader with some guidance, outlining various options and to give you an idea what it is like to move away from school, and most importantly to enjoy oneself. While there are those students who have already made up their mind, and that is great, however we believe this article will provide you with some valuable insights on what to expect and how to handle it. For those of you that require more assistance, the Student Coaches are always available to help you, and provide a better understanding of what this journey is all about
The first thing we want to talk about is, why you should move away from home. Moving away from home is a huge leap, including entering a new school environment, a new city, a new living environment, and most likely a brand new set of friends surrounding you. This might seem like quite a bit, but the thing to keep in mind is that there are all sorts of people in the same place, all encountering the same set of challenges. Challenging yourself is essential in life in order to grow as a person. Helen Keller a famous author who faced numerous challenges in her life provided an applicable quote about life and challenges you are faced with. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” and this is what the Student Coaches would like you to always remember in order to be successful in this transition.
Aside from this notion of challenging yourself there are two other major reasons for choosing to leave home for university. First, as a new student you will likely be living in residence which is just a great experience. Honestly, it is hard to find people that have lived in residence and not enjoyed themselves. Everyone is in the same environment together, and most people make friendships that last a long time. The food is terrible, but everyone can complain about it together!! Learning to live in tight quarters with other people is an amazing learning curve for everyone. More importantly these people you are living with more often than not turn out to be some of the closet friends you will have in your life. Secondly, moving away from home provides you with some space from your family. Whether this is something you are looking forward to or are nervous about trust us, it’s going to be valuable. This space provides you with the opportunity to really get to know yourself. This may seem cheesy or hard to grasp at first but there will be a time through out your degree where you realize how much you have learnt about yourself. (explain why this is important.
Following our insights on why we think moving away for school is so valuable to any students, we do understand this choice isn’t for everyone. There are some significant reasons why you may choose to stay at a local university. For instance, if you come to the conclusion that you aren’t extremely thrilled about the distance or the inability to have family support in times of stress. One key benefit of staying home is the familiarity of your life outside of school. University is an extremely challenging and stressful environment there is no doubt about that. So there is some upside keeping one aspect of your life constant as you work on adapting from high school to university.
With that being said, we really believe given the opportunity to leave home to attend university is a choice you will not regret. The one thing to remember when making this decision is you always have options after the fact, if the choice you decide is not for you, you have the ability to transfer universities if you wish. However, when the time comes no matter the choice the transition into university is going to be challenging.
